Needs Assessment
While there is an abundance of clinical guidelines for pain management, it has been shown that not all of the various therapies in practice for pain are based on solid evidence-based inquiry. For example, low back pain (LBP) management is reflective of a gap between clinical guidelines and actual practice, particularly in the primary care setting. Novel therapies are continuously being studied. Traditional therapeutic options for LBP include exercise, oral anti-inflammatory or analgesic medication, antidepressants, physical therapy and in severe cases, surgery. Evidence-based guidelines also continue to be established in other areas of pain management, such as the most recently published arthritis treatment guidelines from the American Pain Society. New guidelines merit review and exposure to providers in arthritis pain management. Altogether a different challenge is the management of pain in end-of-life environments such as the evidence-based options for the practitioner in the management of cancer pain. Accordingly, there is a need to educate pain management physicians and nurses on therapeutic options for pain.
