Statement of Need:
The effectiveness of opioids for chronic pain is unchallenged, but issues of potential dependence and abuse, as well as social legal concerns, have rendered their use in chronic non-malignant pain controversial. Under treatment of chronic pain persists despite the availability of pharmaceuticals and other therapies that are effective for the management of pain. Physicians and other healthcare providers are sometimes reluctant to prescribe appropriate pain medications because of the perceived danger of misuse, abuse and diversion of these drugs. Effective strategies exist that can allow pain sufferers to be provided with the effective pain management they need while minimizing abuse and misuse potential. It is imperative that the vast audience of healthcare professionals who treat patients in pain be provided with this information on the legal, ethical and appropriate prescribing of opioids for chronic pain. The purpose of this activity is to provide participants with a comprehensive update of the problems associated with the prescribing of opioids from both the physician and patient perspective.
- Balance patients’ needs with current regulatory requirements.
- Identify and treat appropriate candidates for opioid therapy.
- Address legal and regulatory issues associated with the dispensing of opioid analgesics, to include statutory and regulatory requirements.
Intended Audience:
This online activity is intended for physicians, physician assistants, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, and nurses.
Learning Objectives:
- Recognize rational approaches to opioid prescribing.
- Discuss current issues relating to pain and the law.
- List some of the new technologies and strategies for delivering abuse-resistant opioids.
