Statement of Need
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are often used to treat musculo-skeletal disorders and other conditions involving pain. While efficacious, concerns have arisen about the risks of significant upper gastrointestinal tract injury with use of these drugs. Newer agents have been associated with lower rates of gastrointestinal complications.
Physicians, pharmacists and nurses play a key role in the diagnosis and management of pain. Central to that responsibility is a current understanding of the key issues and factors involved in optimizing pharmacologic treatment, which this program seeks to address.
Intended Audience
This program is intended for physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and other associated healthcare professionals who care for patients experiencing acute or chronic pain.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
- Discuss the diagnosis and etiology of acute pain.
- Discuss the need to explore comorbid issues and safety concerns.
- Describe the management of acute pain from the basis of evidence-based medicine.
- Describe the physical symptoms and the most cost appropriate treatment options.
