Statement of Need:
The effectiveness of opioids for chronic pain is unchallenged, but issues of potential dependence and abuse, as well as social legal concerns, have rendered their use in chronic non-malignant pain controversial. Under treatment of chronic pain persists despite the availability of pharmaceuticals and other therapies that are effective for the management of pain. Physicians and other healthcare providers are sometimes reluctant to prescribe appropriate pain medications because of the perceived danger of misuse, abuse and diversion of these drugs. Effective strategies exist that can allow pain sufferers to be provided with the effective pain management they need while minimizing abuse and misuse potential. The purpose of this activity is to provide participants with a comprehensive update of the problems associated with the prescribing of opioids from both the physician and patient perspective.

This online activity is intended for physicians, physician assistants, pharmacists, nurse practitioners, and nurses.

- Recognize the nature of the public health crises of under treated pain and prescription drug abuse.
- Identify the fundamental responsibilities of prescribers of controlled substances.

Method of Participation:
This activity should take approximately 3 hours to complete. The participant should, in order, read the objectives and other introductory CME information, review the slides and listen to the accompanying audio, complete the registration form, post-test, and evaluation form. The evaluation form provides each participant the opportunity to comment on the extent to which educational objectives were met, the quality of the instructional process, the perception of enhanced professional effectiveness, the perception of commercial bias, and his or her views on future educational needs.
